đŽIntroduction:
(Chapter 15: Al-Hijr-The Rock-99 verses)
This chapter is named The Rock after the Dwellers of the Rock mentioned in v.80đĨ, whose fate is a warning to those who sought to kill the Holy Prophet. The chapter begins with the grand promise that the Quran shall forever be guarded against all corruption and all attempts to annihilate it (v. 9đĨđĨ). It goes on to declare that evil-doers cannot inflict any injury on the chosen ones of God and that the devil’s opposition has always failed. Then it gives examples of how opponents of previous prophets were destroyed.

Root: Qaf-Ra-Alif
General Root Meaning:
to recite/read, reading, recitation, explanation, study, investigation.
.
A.L.R. There are many chapters that start with initials like this. See verse 2:1. The
Quran: literally the Recitation. (Root: Q'R). See verse 2:185.
.
Note:
Regarding this lengthy rendering of the participial adjective mubin, see surah 12, note 2. In the above context, the term Qur'an (which, whenever it appears without the definite article al, denotes a solemn "recital" or "discourse") is preceded by the conjunction wa, which, in its simplest connotation, signifies "and"; but since it is used here to stress the present, particular instance of the divine writ (al-kitab), it can be omitted in the translation without affecting the meaning of the sentence(sa).

15:2 And it will come to pass that those who are [now] bent on denying this truth will wish that they had surrendered themselves to God [in their life time].
Note.
Since this revelation-i.e., the Qur'an-is clear in itself and clearly shows the truth, those who deliberately reject it now will have no excuse on Resurrection Day. As so often in the Qur'an, the past tense in the expression alladhina kafaru is indicative of conscious intent (see surah 2:6)(as).

15:4 And never have We destroyed any community [for its wrongdoing] unless a divine writ had (previously] been made known to it;(as).
Note.
Lit., "unless it [the community] had a known divine writ (kitab ma'lum)"-i.e., unless the people in question had been shown through a divine writ the meaning of right and wrong, and had deliberately rejected this divine guidance: cf. the statement, in 26:208, that "never have We destroyed any community unless it had had its warners", or in 6:131, that God "would never destroy a community for its wrongdoing so long as its people are still unaware [of the meaning of right and wrong]".
.
đVerse/Note:
(15:4-5) We have never destroyed any people except in accordance with the law of Mukaf at of which
they were made aware before hand. People are warned, given respite for a while but when that term
expires none can hasten or forestall the inevitable (7/34, 13/38)pz.

đVerse/Note:
15:8 [Yet] We never send down angels otherwise than in accordance with the [demands of] truth;(*) and [were the angels to appear now,] lo! they [who reject this divine writ] would have no further respite!(**)
Note*
Sc., "and not just to satisfy a frivolous demand of people who-refuse to consider a prophetic message on its merits". Moreover-as is evident from the next clause-an actual appearance of the angels to ordinary men would but presage the Day of Judgment (described in 78:39(đ˛) as "the Day of Ultimate Truth") and, thus, the doom of the deniers of the truth spoken of here.
Note**
Cf. 6: 8-"had We sent down an angel, all would indeed have been decided", i.e., the Day of Judgment would have come(as).

15:15 they would surely have said, "It is only our eyes that are spellbound! Nay, we have been bewitched!, in
Note.
Lit., "we are people bewitched". Cf. 6:7, as well as the last paragraph of 10:2 and the corresponding notes in blog. The confusing of revealed truths with illusory "enchantment" or "sorcery" is often pointed out in the Qur'an as characteristic of the attitude of people who a priori refuse to accept the idea of revelation and, thus, of prophethood. The above two verses, implying that not even a direct insight into the wonders of heaven could convince "those who are bent on denying the truth", are a prelude to the subsequent passage, which once again draws our attention to the wonders of nature as an evidence of God's creative activity(as).

15:17 and We have made them secure against every satanic force accursed.
Note.(✔️Assamese Google translate below)
The term shaytan ("satan") -derived from the verb shatana ("he was [or "became"] remote") -often denotes in the Qur'an a force or influence remote from, and opposed to, all that is true and good : thus, for instance, in 2:14 it is used to describe the evil impulses (shayatin) within the hearts of "those who are bent on denying the truth". In its widest, abstract sense it denotes every "satanic force", i.e., every impulsion directed towards ends which are contrary to valid ethical postulates. In the present context, the phrase "every satanic force accursed (rajim)"-like the phrase "every rebellious (marid) satanic force" in a similar context in 37:7-apparently refers to endeavours, strongly condemned in Islam, to divine the future by means of astrological speculations: hence the preceding reference to the skies and the stars. The statement that God has made the heavens "secure" against such satanic forces obviously implies that He has made it impossible for the latter to obtain, through astrology or what is popularly described as "occult sciences", any real knowledge of "that which is beyond the reach of human perception"
(al-ghayb)(as).

15:18 so that anyone who seeks to learn [the unknowable] by stealth is pursued by a flame clear to see.
Note.
Lit., "excepting [or "except that"] anyone who seeks to hear by stealth.. .", etc. The implication seems to be that any attempt at fathoming the mysteries of the unknowable by such illicit means ("by stealth") is inevitably followed by "a flame clear to see", i.e., by burning, self-evident frustration. (Cf. also 37:10.)(as).

Note.
26:210, 37:8, 52:38, 67:5, 72:8. God is everywhere, not just in the skies. The Qur’an dispels all superstitions including the clairvoyants and fortunetellers spying onto His Court(sa).

[15:2] Perhaps (Rubamaa) those who (Ellaziina) disbelieved (Kafaru') will wish (Yawaddu) they had been
(Law' Kaanu') submitters (Mus'limiin).
[15:3] Leave them (Zar'hum) to eat (Ya'kulu') and (Wa) enjoy themselves (Yatamattau') and let them be
amused by (Yal'hi-himu) desire (hope) (El'Amalu), for (Fa) they will (Saw'fa) find out (Ya'lamuun).
[15:4] And (Wa) We do not (Maa) annihilate (Ah'lak'naa) a (Min) town (Qar'yatin) except (illa) while (Wa)
it had (Lahaa) a known (fixed)
(Ma'luum) decree (Kitaabun).
[15:5] No (Maa Min') nation (Ummatin) will precede (Tas'biqu) its term (Ajala-haa), nor (Wamaa) will they
be delayed (Yas'ta'khiruun).
[15:6] And (Wa) they say (Qaalu'), "O you (Yaa Ayyuha) to (Ã
lai'hi) whom (Ellazii) the Remembrance
(Ez'Zik'ru) has been revealed (Nuzzila); indeed, you (s) (Innaka) are (La) a madman (Maj'nuun).
[15:7] "Why do you not (Law' Maa) come to us (Ta'tii-naa) with (Bi) the Angels (El'Malaaikati), if (In) you (s)
should be (Kunta) of (Mina) the truthful (Es'Soadiqiin)?"
[15:8] We do not (Maa) send down (Nunazzilu) the Angels (El'Malaaikata) except (illa) for the truth (Bil'
Haqqi); and (Wa) they (the disbelievers) will (Kaanu') not (Maa) then (Izaan) be respited (Munzoriin).
[15:9] Indeed (Inna), We (Nah'nu) brought down (Nazzal'naa) the Remembrance (16:44) (Ez'Zik'ra), and (Wa)
indeed, We (Inna) are (La) its preservers (Haafizuun La-hu).
[15:10] And (Wa) We had certainly (Laqad') sent (Ar'sal'naa) before you (s) (Min Qab'li-ka) to (Fii) the past
(El'Awwaliin) communities (Shiyae).
[15:11] And (Wa) no (Maa Min) messenger (Rasuulin) came to them (Ya'tii-him) except (illa) they (Kaanu')
ridiculed him (Yas'tah'ziuun Bi-hi).
[15:12] Thus (Kazaalika) have We proceeded it (Nas'luku-hu) in (Fii) the hearts (Quluubi) of the criminals
(El'Muj'rimiin).
[15:13] They will not (Laa) believe (Yu'minuuna) in it (Bihi), while (Wa) the example (Sunnatu) of the
predecessors (El'Awwaliin) has already (Qad') passed (Khalat').
[15:14] Even if (Walaw') We opened (Fatah'naa) a gate (Baaban) for them (Ã
lai'him) from (Mina) the heaven
(Es'Samaai) and (Fa) they continued (Zollu') therein (Fiihi), ascending (Ya'rujuun),
[15:15] they would (La) say (Qaaluu'), "Our eyesight (Ab'soaru-naa) has only (Innamaa) been intoxicated
(Sukkirat'). In fact (Bal'), we (Nah'nu) are a people (Qaw'mun) bewitched (Mas'huuruun)."
[15:16] And (Wa) We have certainly (Laqad') placed (JaÃĨl'naa) constellations (25:61) (Buruujan) in (Fii) the
sky (Es'Samaai) and (Wa) adorned it (Zayyannaa-haa) for the observers (Lin' Naaziriin).
[15:17] And (Wa) We have protected it (Hafiz'naa-haa) from (Min) every (Kulli) rejected (Rajiim) devil
(Shai'toanin)
[15:18] but (illa) whoever (Mani) eavesdrops (Es'taraqa) to listen (Es'Sam'ÃĨ), then (Fa) a clear (Mubiin)
meteor (Shihaabun) will pursue him (At'baÃĨ-hu).
[15:19] As for (Wa) the earth (El'Ar'do), We have spread it out (Madad'naa-haa) and (Wa) cast (Al'qai'naa)
anchors (mountains) (Rawaasiya) therein (Fiihaa) and germinated (Anbat'naa) a balance (Maw'zuun) of (Min) all
(Kulli) things (Shai'in) therein (Fiiha).
