(đēIn the English translation of Torah, published recently by Jews, it is affirmed that according to the latest research, the Bani-Israel did not go through the Red Sea. Instead Moses took them across via a portion of the river which was marshy and where weeds had grown. Because of the growth there,
this part was named the Sea of Reed. It is situated near the present Suez Canal. (The announcement
was made by Mr. Lisserz Ussman, Executive Director of the Jewish Publication Society of America
Daily Telegraph, September 1962.)(pz).

20:77. (Thereafter Moses continued training and educating the Bani-Israel
and at an appropriate time) We revealed to Moses, "Now leave Egypt
together with Our devotees. Do so during the night and take them across from
that part of the sea where the water has receded. You should not be afraid of

In the early period of Islam-and especially after their exodus to Medina, where many Jews were then living-the Muslims expected that the Jews, with their monotheistic beliefs, would be the first to rally to the message of the Qur'an: a hope that was disappointed because the Jews regarded their own religion as a kind of national heritage reserved to the children of Israel alone, and did not believe in the necessity -or possibility -of anew revelation.(asad)].

This passage relates to the time of Moses' ascent of Mount Sinai, mentioned in 2:51 and 7:142.

Lit., "what has hastened thee ahead of thy people?" - implying that he should not have left them alone, without his personal guidance, at so early a stage in their freedom. In this inimitable elliptic manner the Qur'an alludes to the psychological fact that a community which attains to political and social freedom after centuries of bondage remains for a long time subject to the demoralizing influences of its past, and cannot all at once develop a spiritual and social discipline of its own.

Note*
This phrase in its physical sense, i.e.. "they are coming up behind me and are now close by". Since, however. Moses was obviously meant to be alone on his ascent of Mount Sinai, but his answer has a tropical sense, expressing his assumption that the children of Israel would follow his guidance even in his absence: an ✔️assumption which proved erroneous, as shown in the sequence.(as).

[20:77] And (Wa) We had certainly (Laqad') inspired (Aw'hai'naa) to (ilaa) Moses (Muusaa) that (An'),
"Travel with (As'ri Bi) MY servants (Ebaadii) and (Fa) strike (Ed'rib') a dry (Yabasan) path (Tariiqan) through
(Fii) the sea (El'Bah'ri) for them (Lahum'); you shall not (Laa) fear (Takhaafu) being overtaken (Darakan) nor
(Walaa) shall you be afraid (Takh'shaa)."
[20:78] So (Fa) Pharaoh (Fir'ÃĨw'nu) pursued them (At'baÃĨ-hum') with (Bi) his soldiers (Junuudi-hi), and (Fa)
they (the enemies) were covered (Gashiya-hum) by what (Maa) covered them (Gashiya-hum') of (Mina) the sea
(El'Yammi).
[20:79] And (Wa) Pharaoh (Fir'ÃĨw'nu) misled (Adolla) his people (Qaw'ma-hu) and (Wa) could not (Maa)
guide (Hadaa).
[20:80] “O (Yaa) Children of Israel (Banii Is'raa'iila), We had certainly (Qad') rescued you (Anjai'naa-kum)
from (Min') your enemy (Ã
duwwi-kum'), and (Wa) We made an appointment with you (Waaed'naa-kum')
at the right (El'Ai'mana) side (Jaaniba) of the Mount (Sinai) (Ettuuri), and (Wa) We sent down (Nazzal'naa) to
you (Ã
lai'kumu) manna (El'Manna) and quails (Es'Sal'waa),
[20:81] "Eat (Kulu') from (Min) the good things (Toyyibaati) which (Maa) We have provided for you
(Razaq'naa-kum') but (Wa) do not (Laa) transgress (Tot'gaw') therein (Fiihi), then (Fa) MY wrath (Gadobii)
will arrive (Yahilla) upon you (Ã
lai'kum'). And (Wa) whomever (Man) MY wrath (Gadabii) arrives (Yah'lil')
upon him (Ã
lai'hi), then (Fa) he has indeed (Qad') fallen (Hawaa).
[20:82] "And (Wa) indeed, I am (Innii) the (La) Forgiver (Gaffaarun) for whoever (Liman) repents (Taaba)
and (Wa) believes (Aamana) and (Wa) acts (Ã
mila) righteous (Soalihan) and then (Thumma) remains guided
(Eh'tadaa).”
[20:83] “And (Wa) what (Maa) made you (Moses) hasten (A'jala-ka) away from (Ã
n) your people (Qaw'mi-ka),
O (Yaa) Moses (Muusaa)?"
[20:84] He (Moses) said (Qaala), "Those are (Hum' U'laai) upon (Ã
laa) my footprint (step) (Atharii), so (Wa) I
hastened (Ã
jil'tu) to YOU (ilai'ka); LORD (Rabbi), that (Li) YOU may be pleased (Tar'doa)."
[20:85] HE (God) said (Qaala), "For (Fa) indeed (Innaa), We have trialled (Fatannaa) your people (Qaw'ma-ka)
after you (Min Ba'di-ka), but (Wa) the Samaritan (Es'Saamiriyyu) has misguided them (Adolla-humu)."
[20:86] So (Fa) Moses (Muusaa) returned (RajaÃĨ) to (ilaa) his people (Qaw'mi-hi), infuriated (Gad'baana)
and sorrowful (Asifaan). He said (Qaala), "O (Yaa) my people (Qaw'mi), did (A-) your LORD (Rabbu-kum')
not (-lam') promise you (Yaed'kum') a good (Hasanan) promise (Wa'dan)? Was (A-) the agreement (El'Ã
h'du)
then (-fa) too long for you (Toala Ã
lai'kumu), or (Am') do you want (Aradttum') the wrath (Gadobun) of
(Min) your LORD (Rabbi-kum') to (An) arrive (Yahilla) upon you (Ã
lai'kum'), and (Fa) you broke
(Akh'laf'tum) my appointment (Maw'edii)?"
[20:87] They said (Qaalu'), "We did not (Maa) break (violate) (Akh'laf'naa) your appointment (Maw'eda-ka) by
(Bi) our control (Mal'ki-naa), but (Walaakinnaa) we carried (Hummil'naa) burdens (Aw'zaaran) from (Min)
the people's (El'Qaw'mi) adornment (Ziinati), so (Fa) we threw them (Qaz'fa'naa-haa), and (Fa) thus
(Kazaalika) did the Samaritan (Es'Saamiriyyu) cast (Al'qaa)."
[20:88] So (Fa) he (the Samaritan) produced (Akh'raja) for them (Lahum') the embodiment (Jasadan) of a calf
(Ej'lan) which had (Lahu) a moo sound (Khuwaarun), then (Fa) they said (Qaalu'), "This (Haaza) is your god
(ilaahu-kum') and (Wa) the god (ilaahu) of Moses (Muusaa)," but (Fa) he forgot (Nasiyaa).
[20:89] Did they not (Afalaa) see (Yaraw'na) that it could not (Allaa) return (Yar'jiu) a word (Qaw'lan) to
them (ilai'him') nor (Walaa) possesses (Yam'liku) adversity (Dorraan) for them (Lahum') nor (Walaa) benefit
(Naf'ÃĨÃĨ)?
