📍Verse:
18:18 You would have thought that they were awake, even when they slept. (They remained alert round the clock.) We made them change their positions right and left, frequently. They had a faithful dog to guard the entrance, with its four paws outstretched (ready to pounce). The whole environment was awe-inspiring. Had you come upon them suddenly, you would have fled away from them in awe(sa).

📍Verse/Note:
18:20 for, behold, if they should come to know of you, they might stone you to death or force you back to their faith-in which case you would never attain to any good!"

Note.
During their "sleep", time had stood still for the Men of the Cave, and so they assumed that the outside world had remained unchanged and was, as before, hostile to them. - At this point, the story as such ends abruptly (for, as we know, the Qur'an is never concerned with narratives for their own sake) and is revealed in the sequence as an allegory of death and resurrection and of the relativity of "time" as manifested in man's consciousness(as).
.
📍Note:
Stoning as a punishment is not decreed in the Quran. In the Quran stoning is only carried out
by mushrikeen, disbelievers and those who reject this guidance. See verse 11:91(sig).

📍Verse/Note:
18:22 Then, some would say they were three, and their dog was the fourth, and some would say five, and their dog the sixth. They only made wild guesses, and some of them said that they were seven and their dog was the eighth. Say, "My Lord is best Aware of their number.” There are some who know🌀 their right number but, do not argue about them except a passing comment. You need not consult anyone about them (to avoid undue controversies)(sa).

Note🌀
*The last statement that they were seven and their dog was the eighth, is not denied by the Qur’an. Those who get this point probably know their number.
.
📍Note: Are dogs the untouchables? It seems that dogs have really been put in the doghouse by
traditionalists, despite the fact the Quran designates their role as companions and co-hunters. In
this history of the young men who took refuge in the cave, their dog shared a place sleeping
amidst them. The dog was clearly a friend to the boys otherwise why would it be there?
Furthermore in sura verse 5:4 God permits people to eat the animals hunted and caught by their
trained dogs. Apparently like most of the deviant beliefs the repulsion for dogs comes from the fabricated hadith wrongly attributed to the good messenger. Dogs as hunters and pets add value
to human life and should be welcomed(SIG)

(Yatanaazauuna) their affair (Am'ra-hum') between them (Bai'nahum) and (Fa) said (Qaalu'), "Construct
(Eb'nu') a building (Bun'yaana) for them (Ålai'him); their LORD (Rabbu-hum) is aware of them (A'lamu Bi
him)." Those who (Ellaziina) prevailed in (Galabu' Ålaa) their affair (Am'ri-him) said (Qaala), "We will (La)
seize (Nattakhizanna) a mosque (place of worship) (Mas'jidaa) for them (Ålai'him)."
[18:22] Some will say (Sa Yaquuluuna), "They were three (Thalaathatun); their dog (Kal'bu-hum) was their fourth
(Raabiu-hum)," and (Wa)
others will say (Yaquuluuna), "Five (Kham'satun); their dog (Kal'bu-hum) was their
sixth (Saadisu-hum)," as they guess (Raj'maa Bi) the unseen (El'Gai'bi); and (Wa)
others will say (Yaquuluuna),
"Seven (Sab'ÃĨtun), and (Wa) their dog (Kal'bu-hum) was their eighth (Thaaminu-hum)." Say (Qul): "My
LORD (Rabbii) is aware of (A'lamu Bi) their number (Eddati-him). None (Maa) knows them (Ya'lamu-hum)
except (illa) a few (Qaliilun)." So do not (Falaa) dispute (Tumaari) about them (Fiihim) except (illa) with an
obvious (Zoahiraan) dispute (Miraa'an), nor (Walaa) shall you seek a legal opinion (Tas'taf'ti) about them
(Fiihim)
from anyone (Ahadan) among them (Min'hum).
