Foot note-sig:
The messenger undoubtedly followed tradition common in his society and was therefore stopped from worshipping idols when he received the revealed guidance from God. There were other occasions when the messenger erred and was corrected by God, and also other messengers had doubts, faltered or disobeyed God. Except in the case of receiving and conveying God's revelation and guidance protected by God, messengers in their daily human capacity were capable
of making mistakes or being wrong. How then can other human beings such as imams, saints and others be seen as infallible? Messengers with human failings: see verses Muhammad 9:43; 17:73;

[9:45] Only (Innamaa) those who (Ellaziina) do not (Laa) believe (Yu'minuuna) in GOD (Billahi) and the Last Day (Wal' Yaw'mil' Aakhiri) and whose hearts (Quluubu-hum') have doubted (Er'taabat') would request for
your authorization (s) (Yas'ta'zinuka), for (Fa) they (Hum') are hesitating (Yataraddaduun) in (Fii) their doubt
(Rai'bi-him').
.
📍Verse/Note:
9:45 Those who ask leave are the ones who do not acknowledge God and the Last day, and their hearts are in doubt. In their doubts they are wavering.

Note:
Hypocrites and polytheists claim that they believe in God (23:84-90). Indeed, with their faith in the intercession of prophets and saints, they profess faith in the hereafter (10:18). Nevertheless, they have doubts in their compromised faith, which is the result of joining the bandwagon or wishful thinking (9:45; 11:110; 14:9; 34:21; 41:45; 44:9). We are told that a conviction/acknowledgement based on knowledge is not contaminated with doubts (49:15). Ironically, many polytheists are in denial of their polytheism (6:23)(edip).

For (Wa) indeed (Inna), Hell (Jahannama) will (La) encompass (Muhiitotu Bi) the disbelievers (El'Kaafiriin).
.
📍Verse/Note of Asad:
9:49 And among them there was [many a one] who said,"* Grant me permission [to remain at home], and do not put me to too hard a test!" Oh, verily, [by making such a request] they had [already failed in their test and] succumbed to a temptation to evil:** and, behold, hell will indeed encompass all who refuse to acknowledge the truth!

Note*
I.e., at the time when the Prophet was making preparations for the campaign.

Note**
See verses 44 and 45 above. It is to be noted that both the verbal form la taftinni (rendered by me as "do not put me to too hard a test") and the noun fitnah have the same root, comprising a great complex of meanings: e.g., test, trial, affliction. temptation to evil, seduction, persecution, oppression, discord, civil strife, etc. (cf. surah🏇 8:25). Since it is impossible in any language but Arabic to reproduce all these many shades of meaning in a single expression, the rendering of the term fitnah must necessarily vary in accordance with the context in which it is used.

(🏇8:25 And beware of that temptation to evil which does not befall only those among you who are bent on denying the truth, to the exclusion of others;* and know that God is severe in retribution.

Note*
The term fitnah - here rendered as "temptation to evil" - comprises a wide range of concepts, e.g., "seduction" or "trial" or "test" or "an affliction whereby one is tried"; hence also "confusion" (as in 3:7 and 6:23), "discord" or "dissension" (because it constitutes a "trial" of human groupments), as well as "persecution" and "oppression" (because it is an affliction which may cause man to go astray and to lose his faith in spiritual values -a meaning in which the word fitnah is used in 2:191 and 193); and, finally, "sedition" and "civil war" (because it leads whole communities astray). Since the expression "temptation to evil" is applicable to all these meanings, it appears to be the most suitable in the above context: the idea being that it is not merely the deliberate deniers of spiritual truths who are exposed to such a temptation, but that also people who are otherwise righteous may fall prey to it unless they remain always, and consciously, on their guard against anything that might lead them astray from the right course.)
