[2:189] They ask you (s) (Yas'aluunaka) about (Ã
ni) the Crescents (new moons) (El'Ahillati)! Say (Qul'): "They
(Hiya) are timings (Mawaaqiitu) for the people (Lin' Naasi) and (Wa) the Pilgrimage (El'Hajji)." And (Wa) it is
not (Lai'sa Bi) righteousness (El'Birru) to (An) enter (Ta'tu') houses (El'Buyuuta) from (Min) their backs
(Zuhuuri-ha), but (Walaakinna) righteous (El'Birra) is one who (Mani) reverences (Ettaqaa) and (Wa) enters
(Etu') houses (El'Buyuuta) through (Min') their doors (Ab'waabi-haa). So (Wa) beware of GOD (Ettaqu'llaha)
perhaps you (LaÃĨllakum) will succeed (Tuf'lihuun).
.
đVerse/Note-1
189 We have stated earlier that fasting is during the month of Ramadan. This has led some peoples to think that some months are auspicious and some are inauspicious and they have referred the matter to you. O Rasool! say to them that it is mere superstition to call some months (or days) auspicious or inauspicious. In fact, specification of time is only to determine the calendar. The advantage of having a calendar is obvious for instance, it enables you to know when the Hajj is to be performed. Tell them clearly that superstition has no place in Deen. For instance, the belief that
during the Hajj, the house should be entered from the back, and not from the front-door is only a superstition. Righteousness is not associated with such rites. It is concerned only with the degree to which you adhere to the Divine Laws and with thesublimity of your character. Therefore, set aside such ignorant practices and enter houses during the Hajj as you do during other days.
Follow the Divine Laws and live according to your normal routine. this is the way to
achieve success and bliss in life.(pz).
.
đNote-2
The reference, at this stage, to lunar months arises from the fact that the observance of several of the religious obligations instituted by Islam - like the fast of Ramadan, or the pilgrimage to Mecca (which is dealt with in verses 196-203)-is based on the lunar calendar, in which the months rotate through the seasons of the solar year. This fixation on the lunar calendar results in a continuous variation of the seasonal circumstances in which those religious observances are performed (e.g., the length of the fasting-period between dawn and sunset, heat or cold at the time of the fast or the pilgrimage), and thus in a corresponding, periodical increase or decrease of the hardship involved. In addition to this, reckoning by lunar months has a bearing on the tide and ebb of the oceans, as well as on human physiology.
.
I.e., true piety does not consist in approaching questions of faith through a "back door", as it were - that is, through mere observance of the forms and periods set for the performance of various religious duties (cf. 2:177). However important these forms and time-limits may be in themselves, they do not fulfil their real purpose unless every act is approached through its spiritual "front door", that is, through God-consciousness. Since, metonymically, the word bab ("door") signifies "a means of access to, or of attainment of, a thing", the metaphor of "entering a house through its door" is often used in classical Arabic to denote a proper approach to a problem.
.
đNote-3
2:189 (Self-control is a life-long commitment extending beyond the month of Ramadhan.) They ask you (O Messenger) about the phases of the Moon. Say, “They are to help mankind determine certain seasons such as Hajj.” But know that righteousness can never be achieved by entering the System through the back door of ritualism. Only he who lives an upright life attains it. Enter the Divinely ordained Way of Life straightforward as you must enter houses through their gates. Live an upright life being mindful of God so that you may reap a rich harvest.
.
"Do not enter homes from behind" is an idiom. Criticizing the opponent with ambiguous allegations and questions is not an efficient way of communicating; it causes animosity and misunderstanding(edip).
.
The literal Quranic idiom says: "Do not enter the homes through the back doors." The question about the phases of the moon is an example of beating around the bush; there were bad ulterior motives behind this question(rk).
.
2:138, 2:177, 2:208. There is no such thing as a part-time Muslim(sa).

đVerse/Note-1
2:191 Subdue them regardless of their tribal affiliations, and drive them out of where they drove you out. For, persecution, (terror, torture, oppression) is a crime more grievous than killing. Do not fight against them near the Masjidof Security (a haven of amnesty) unless they attack you therein. But if they attack you there, then you shall fight against them. Such is the recompense for those who reject (the Standard of Peace).
.
Haith = Wherever = Whenever. Thaqif = Find out = Come to know. So, fight them regardless of your knowledge of their socio-geographic origins. The Masjid of Security in Makkah must be a safe Sanctuary, a model of amnesty, and a Meeting point for all mankind. 2:125, 2:144, 3:96, 5:2, 5:97, 9:18, 22:25, 48:25. Qatl = Kill = Bring low = Subdue = Fight = Attack = Slay = Strike = Defend
